REINBECK - The Class 1A No. 11 Gladbrook-Reinbeck volleyball team swept Collins-Maxwell in the 1A Region 3 quarterfinals on Monday, 25-16, 25-19, 25-16. The Rebels (26-9) only faced adversity in the second set, when the Spartans (14-13) jumped out to a 14-7 lead. G-R got back into it thanks to some strong serving by Rachael Scarf, however, as she served for six-straight points, including two aces, and the Rebels retook the lead at 15-14 on the way to a 25-19 win. Scarf finished the night with a 22-for-22 serving line and a team-high four aces. Gladbrook-Reinbeck head coach Paula Kelley said her girls took a while to get going but when they did it looked good. "I thought we started off slow tonight and really didn't play Rebel volleyball until the third game," Kelley said. "Passing dictated our speed tonight. We will need to clean it up for Thursday like we have been playing." Saari Kuehl continued to show why she had the second-most kills in 1A with her performance against Collins-Maxwell. Kuehl had a team-high 19 kills and a team-high 11 digs in the victory, and for good measure she chipped in two aces to finish second on the team behind Scarf. "Saari came through with some key hits tonight," Kelley said. "Rachael Scarf was huge in the serving department and also had some good touches at the net on defense." Haleigh Berendes finished second on the team in kills with nine, while Meriah Wittgreve had four and Justina Eggers had three. Alyssa Morgan was second in digs with eight and Wittgreve had two blocks. Up next the Rebels will face No. 5 North Tama in Traer on Thursday for the regional semifinals at 7 p.m. G-R and the Redhawks have met three times this season, with North Tama winning all three matches. The Rebels have pushed them to the full set allotment twice, however, including a five-set thriller in Traer less than two weeks ago. "We are excited and looking forward to Thursday's matchup," Kelley said. "It should be a great match."
